British ambassador says Somalia conference marks significant achievement

(Vatican Radio) International donors have pledged over 300 million dollars to Somalia to help with the development of security, justice and financial institutions in the conflict ridden East African nation. The pledges came yesterday at a one day international conference hosted by the British government and the Somali President in London to tackle ongoing challenges of poverty, malnourishment and regional extremism.
Following two decades of violence and lawlessness in Somalia, a parliament was appointed and presidential elections were held last year, though the militant group Al Shabaab continues to carry out suicide attacks.
British ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker, told Philippa Hitchen the conference does mark a significant achievement, building on steady progress that has been made in Somalia since the last London conference in February 2012
