Pope Francis receives President of the Republic of Colombia
On Monday Pope Francis received in audience the president of the Republic of Colombia, Mr. Juan Manuel Santos Calderon. A statement released by the Holy See after the meeting said the two held cordial talks which focused on several issues including St. Laura Montoya, the first Colombian saint and fruitful interpreter of the country's Christian roots, who was canonized on Sunday. They discussed also the contribution of the Catholic Church to Columbia and the challenges the country faces, in regard to social inequalities. Particular attention was put on the civil conflict in the country, its victims and the need for constructive dialogue, inspired by a sincere search for reconciliation. Finally, the Church's commitment in favour of life and of families was emphasized. After meeting the Colombian President, the Holy Father received a group of Bishops from the Italian region of Puglia who are in the Vatican for their traditional visit to the Holy See which takes place every five years.
