The Holy Father receives the president of the European Commision, José Barroso

The Holy Father on Saturday morning received in private audience, the President of the European Commission, His Excellency Mr. José Manuel Durão Barroso. After the meeting with pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, Mr Barroso also went to meet with the Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who was in the company of the Vatican’s secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.

A communique from the Vatican that followed the encounters said that he discussions were very cordial and provided an opportunity for a useful exchange of views on the international situation, paying particular attention to the process of European integration, as well as the continuing economic crisis that has serious consequences on employment, especially for young persons, and a negative impact on family life.

Much of the focus was on the contribution that the Catholic church can make in the current climate for Europe’s material and spiritual wellbeing. The talks also gave special attention to the promotion of human rights, especially that of religious freedom, and the protection of Christian minorities around the world.
