Five hanged in Nigeria for armed robbery and murder
Reports from Nigeria say four notorious criminals were hanged on Monday in Benin City state after President Goodluck Jonathan and state governors signed the execution warrants. The fifth was hanged on Tuesday. The men had been convicted of armed robbery and murder and had exhausted all the appeals. Prison officials said more than 1,000 other prisoners in Nigeria are on death row. The last time criminals were hanged in Nigeria was in 2006. Amnesty International has condemned the executions and appealed to Nigeria to abolish the death penalty.
