Pope Francis visits his predecessor ahead of World Youth Day

Pope Francis on Friday afternoon visited his predecessor, Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI ahead of his trip to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day. The Holy Father spent about half-hour with the retired pope in a former convent in the Vatican and asked him for his prayers for the July 22-29 trip which Benedict had planned to make before retiring in February. Pope Francis gave the pope emeritus the booklet outlining the program as well as the commemorative medal that has been prepared for the trip. Benedict XVI participated in the World Youth Day events in Cologne, Germany, soon after he was elected in 2005. Then in Sydney, Australia, in 2008; and Madrid, Spain, in 2011.
