Floods displace thousands in Sudan

The United Nations and its partners in Sudan have announced that floods caused by heavy rains have displaced more than half a million people and have destroyed thousands of houses. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and civil society and volunteer organizations said they had supplied the affected people with emergency water and sanitation, health items and food. Sudan usually receives rains around this time, but this year they have been much heavier than in the past. On Sunday six Peacekeepers working with the UN mission in Darfur, were swept away by powerful rain water while escorting World Food Programme trucks to a place called Masteri, in west Darfur. The incident occurred when the peacekeepers attempted to pull out their truck which was stuck in the mud of a river valley. A rescue team found two of them alive. The search for the other four is still going on.
