European Union naval ships to be deployed in the Mediterranean Sea to stop Boats carrying illegal immigrants

The European Commission presented a plan to the European Ministers on Tuesday to deploy ships in the Mediterranean sea to stop and search boats carrying illegal immigrants and to rescue those in danger of death. Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem told the ministers in Luxembourg that the search and rescue operation would track and rescue boats and this will help prevent tragedies like the one that happened on the Italian island of Lampedusa last week where more than two hundred African immigrants died when their overcrowded boat accidentally caught fire and sank. Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to reach Europe by boats but many die in the Mediterranean Sea.
