Pope Francis summons an extraordinary synod of bishops, the third in the history of synods

Pope Francis has convoked an Extraordinary General Assembly of the synod of bishops, to discuss the theme: The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization. The third such meeting in the history of synods will take place in the Vatican from the 5th to 19th of October 2014. The Synod of Bishops was established by Pope Paul Vl on 15 September 1965, defining it as an “ecclesiastic institution” meant to foster the unity and cooperation of bishops around the world with the Holy See. “It does this by means of a common study concerning the conditions of the Church and a joint solution on matters concerning Her mission.” There are three types of synods: ordinary general assemblies, extraordinary general assemblies and special assemblies.
The first Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of bishops was held from the 11-28 October 1969 on the theme: "Cooperation between the Holy See and the Episcopal Conferences." The first Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of bishops was held from the 11-28 October 1969 on the theme: "Cooperation between the Holy See and the Episcopal Conferences." The second Extraordinary General Assembly followed 16 years later. The 25th November to 8th December meeting of bishops in 1985 discussed the theme: "The Twentieth Anniversary of the Conclusion of the Second Vatican Council." One of the three Presidents Delegate of that synod was the late Cardinal Joseph Malula, of Kinshasa in the DRC then known as Zaire. As the two previous ones held two years after their Ordinary General assemblies, this third one called by Pope Francis will also be held two years after the last Ordinary General Assembly of Bishops, held in October 2012 on the theme "The New Evangelization in the transmission of the Christian faith."
