Pope Francis to preside at Marian celebrations this weekend

In a tweet on Friday, Pope Francis said Mary gives us the strength to embrace the cross. Through the handle @pontifex which is now nearing 10 million followers in nine languages, the Pope wrote: When we encounter the Cross, we turn to Mary: Give us the strength, Mary our Mother, to accept and embrace the Cross!
Pope Francis is scheduled to preside at a Marian celebration this weekend in the Vatican to commemorate the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima and the 51st anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization organized the Marian Day on Oct. 12 &13, upon the request of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI in the context of the Year of Faith. The day dedicated to Mary was presented by officials from the council during a press conference in the Press Office of the Holy See on Friday.
The Holy Father will receive the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima on the afternoon of Saturday, October 12th in St. Peter’s Square and will later be exposed for veneration. The statue will then make its way to the Sanctuary of Divine Love, where the Rosary will prayed and broadcast to Marian sanctuaries around the world. On Sunday, October 13th, the statue will be returned to St. Peter’s where the recitation of the Rosary will take place, followed by a Mass presided by Pope Francis.
