Preparations for the 50th Anniversary of the Canonisation of the Uganda Martyrs begin in Kampala Archdiocese

Archbishop of Kampala in Uganda, His Grace Cyprian Lwanga, has launched preparations to mark 50 years since the canonisation of the Uganda martyrs. The celebrations will take place on October 18th next year. The 22 Catholic Uganda martyrs were canonised by Pope Paul VI in Rome on October 18th 1964. Speaking from Kampala, at the weekend, Archbishop Lwanga said he had lit a candle to declare the start of the activities. He noted that the Uganda martyrs, although they are Ugandans, they are saints of the Catholic Church. Today there is renewed vigour in honouring them in the entire Catholic Church, something that has created a positive image of Uganda abroad. The Archbishop was recently received by Pope Francis here in the Vatican. He told the faithful when he returned to Uganda that he, on behalf of the church in Uganda, he had invited the Pope to preside over the Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.
