Cor Unum – Helping Syrian Refugee Children in Lebanon

A press conference was held in the Vatican on Wednesday (Nov. 27) to present an initiative for refugee children from Syria living in Lebanon. The “Healthcare Mission for Syrian Child Refugees in Lebanon” initiative is promoted by the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, along with the Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital of Rome and Caritas Lebanon. Speaking at the presentation, the President of Cor Unum, the aid and development department of the Holy See, Cardinal Robert Sarah said: “Helping the Syrian population, regardless of ethnic origin or religious belief, is the most direct way of contributing to peace-building and the edification of a society open to all its different members.” He explained that Pope Francis' words inspired this project, in the hope that tragedies such as the one taking place in Syria may never be repeated. Cardinal Sarah said the allocated funds will be able to help between 3 and 4 thousand children, but noted that with Christmas approaching, a period in which, unfortunately, consumerism often overshadows the message of the Annunciation of the Birth of Jesus, the Catholic church can make a difference by helping these children suffering because of the war in Syria. The Cardinal also announced that he along with Secretary of ‘Cor Unum’, Bishop Giampietro Dal Toso, will make a trip to Lebanon from 4 to 8 December. The other speakers at Wednesday’s conference to illustrate the healthcare initiative for Syrian refugee children in Lebanon were: Professor Giuseppe Profiti, president of Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital; Fr. Simon Faddoul, president of Caritas Lebanon; and May El Hachem, director of the department of dermatology at Bambino Gesu Paediatric Hospital.
