Nelson Mandela dies, Tribute of the President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, archbishop Stephen Brislin



The first black South African President, Nelson Mandela, died on Thursday night in his home in Johannesburg at the age of 95. He died of cancer. Mandela spent 27 years in jail for opposing the racist apartheid government and was released in 1991. In 1994 he was elected South Africa's first black president. The President of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, archbishop Stephen Brislin of Cape Town, issued a statement on Friday expressing sadness but at the same time paying tribute to this great leader.
