On Monday Pope Francis received in audience the President of the Republic of Congo, Mr. Denis Sassou N'guesso. A statement issued by the Holy See after the meeting said the two discussed the contribution of the Catholic Church to the people of Congo, particularly in the fields of healthcare and education. They discussed also the relationship between the Holy See and the Republic of Congo and committed themselves to further strengthen the bilateral cooperation. Lastly, they exchanged views on the situation in the Central African Republic where the Moslem Seleka rebels are unleashing a campaign of terror against the civilian population and against Christian churches. They agreed that that there was need for particular attention to the care of refugees and displaced persons, and to address the problem of security in the region, including the growth of fundamentalism.
