Rwanda's Supreme Court sentences Victorie Ingabire to 15 years in Jail

Rwanda's Supreme court sentenced an opposition politician, Victoire Ingabire, on Friday to 15 years in jail on appeal. It increased her prison term by seven years. A lower court of appeal had sentenced her to eight years. The court upheld a previous conviction for terrorist conspiracy and minimizing Rwanda's 1994 genocide, in which 800,000 people were killed by extremist Interahamwe militias and government troops. She was also found guilty of spreading rumors to incite violence. She was arrested in October 2010 after forming a political party that the government refused to recognise, and jailed in 2012. Before her arrest, she had delivered several speeches criticizing the government which the authorities said threatened national security.
