Pope Francis visits his predecessor

Pope Francis visited his predecessor, Pope-emeritus Benedict XVI, on Monday evening to exchange Christmas greetings. Benedict XVI met his successor at the door of his residence in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery inside the Vatican, and the two warmly greeted each other and spent a few minutes together in prayer in the chapel of the residence. They then spent about 30 minutes in private conversation and exchanged Christmas wishes. Pope Francis also met with the staff of the Mater Ecclesiae residence, offering Christmas blessings to all, before his departure.

“The Lord is coming. May we await him with open hearts!” This was the text of a message Pope Francis sent out on the microblogging website twitter on Tuesday to draw attention to Jesus’ birth.
