Kampala Archdiocese in Uganda launches Campaign for the 50th anniversary of the Canonisation of the Uganda Martyrs

The Archbishop of Kampala in Uganda, His Grace Cyprian Lwanga, has launched the campaign for the 50th anniversary of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs in his diocese. The launch was done on Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Parish, where he presided over Holy Mass and also baptized 40 children who were named after the Uganda Martyrs. He told the faithful that the purpose of the campaign was to explain to the people who the Uganda Martyrs are. The 22 Catholic Uganda Martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI on October 18th 1964 in St. Peter’s Basilica. The 50th anniversary of their canonization was launched last year in the country and will be celebrated this year on October 18th at Namogongo shrine where majority of them were burnt to death by a local King called Mwanga. The President of the Uganda Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop John Baptist Odama of Gul, told Vatican Radio recently that the Episcopal Conference had invited Pope Francis to preside over the concluding celebrations on October 18th.
