The remains of Bishop Deogratias Byabazaire laid to rest

The remains of the retired Bishop of Hoima diocese in Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Deogratias Byabazaire, were laid to rest on Tuesday in the cathedral of Hoima. The retired Archbishop of Kampala, Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala presided over the liturgy and described the late bishop as a good shepherd who fed the hungry, who was innovative and who cared for all people. Bishop Byabazaire came from a rich family, but he lived like a poor person and used his resources to help the poor and to promote the girl child in the diocese. The ordinary people who knew him described him as a humble person who cared for the marginalized and who educated needy children. By the time of his death he was paying school fees for over 300 girls and many boys from poor families. The funeral was attended by thousands of people who included the local bishops, the Apostolic nuncio and government officials. He died last Saturday at Entebbe airport on his way from India where he had gone for treatment. He died of diabetes, high blood pressure and of a brain tumor.
