UN Secretary general laments about the violence in Sudan

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says he is deeply concerned about the escalation of violence in Sudan. Since late February, fighting between rebel groups and local militia in South Darfur, where entire villages have been burnt, has left thousands of people homeless.
In North Darfur, over the past few days, thousands of people have fled inter-communal fighting and sought protection at a UN camp. More violent attacks on unarmed civilians yesterday in the Um Gunya area has led the UN human rights chief to demand an immediate halt to the attacks on unarmed civilians. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, says there has been a disproportionate use of force by armed groups in locations that are not military targets:
