Pope meets with the president of Malta

Pope Francis on Friday received in audience the President of the Republic of Malta, H.E. George Abela, who later went on to meet with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Dominic Mamberti. A statement from the Holy See Press Office said several topics were discussed during the meetings, including the deep mark of Christianity in the history, culture, and life of the Maltese people, as well as the good relations between the Holy See and Malta and recalled the pastoral visits of Blessed John Paul II and Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. The discussions made particular reference to the contribution of the Catholic Church in education and welfare, as well as to a recently concluded agreement between the Holy See and Malta aiming at a fruitful cooperation in the service of the common good. In conclusion, there was a discussion on the contribution of Malta in the European Union, as well as certain situations in the Mediterranean region, and the issue of migration to Europe, which involves both the Church and Government.
