Campaigns for Parliamentary and Presidential elections officially begin in Malawi

Campaigns for the parliamentary and Presidential elections scheduled for May 20th this year opened on Friday in Malawi with the country’s Electoral Commission calling upon the political parties to avoid violence. Eleven political parties are taking part. One incident occurred last Sunday at a political rally organised for President Joyce Banda in the town of Thyolo. Supporters of the president’s People’s Party, and of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party fought battles which resulted in several deaths. Several political parties have pledged to conduct peaceful campaigns in accordance with the rules set by the electoral commission but many of the opposition parties have complained that president Banda’s party is using state resources and institutions such as the media to conduct its campaigns.
