Pope names a new Nuncio for Zimbabwe

Pope Francis has named Msgr. Marek Zalewski as Apostolic Nuncio to Zimbabwe while at the same time raising him to the rank of archbishop of the titular see of Africa. Until his appointment Tuesday, the Polish-born priest has been serving as Counsellor of the Nunciature in Zimbabwe. He was born on the 2 February 1963 in Augustow in Poland and was ordained a priest on 27 May 1989. After completing his studies in Canon Law, he entered the Vatican Diplomatic Service on 1 July 1995. Since then he has served at the Holy See’s Permanent Observer Mission at the UN in New York, in the Nunciatures in Great Britain, Germany, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.
Msgr. Marek Zalewski speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish.
The Nunciature in Zimbabwe has been vacant since the former nuncio Archbishop George Kocherry was named Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh on the 6 July last year.
