Nigeria: New bishop for Abeokuta

Pope Francis has named Fr. Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo as bishop of the Diocese of Abeokuta in Nigeria. The bishop-elect, who turned 50 on 28 January, has been serving as Parish Priest and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Ibadan. Fr. Odetoyinbo was ordained a priest on 7 October 1989 for the Archdiocese of Ibadan after completing his formation at the Sts. Peter and Paul Major Seminary at Bodija (Ibadan).
The Diocese of Abeokuta was created in 1997 and is under the Archdiocese of Lagos. It has a population of around 2,500.000. About 70.000 are Catholics served by 44 diocesan and 17 religious priests, alongside 40 sisters and 31 seminarians, in 35 parishes. The Diocese of Abeokuta has been vacant since the transfer in May 2012 of its shepherd, current Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins.
