Bishops Council calls for political pressure to protect environment
March 20, 2012: Kerala catholic bishops Council (KCBC) called for political pressure
to protect and preserve environment for future generations, revealed a pastoral letter
published on Tuesday. Formulating suitable policies for the Preservation of the environment,
the bishops council urged all to collaborate with pro-environment projects of the
center and state governments, and join hands with the like-minded non-governmental
organisations.
Our decision today will decide the existence of our environment
tomorrow, the communique cautioned. It also highlighted the need to develop a spirituality
that respects nature.
The letter issued for all the three rites in Kerala
– viz, syro Malabar, Syro Malankara and Latin, urged them to observe a Sunday in May
2012 for environment.
Environmental protection is part of social justice.
There are so much inequalities in the world especially in the distribution of natural
resources. While some countries control a large part of it, some others live in utter
poverty. KCBC also pointed out the victims of environmental degradation – viz. women,
children and the poor.
The circular was issued by Abraham Mar Julios, episcopal
adviser of the KCBC environmental council.
