Dhaka University dedicates new library to Catholic archbishop
September 09, 2013 - The University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, honoured late Archbishop
Theotonius Amal Ganguly of Dhaka last week, naming a new library after him. The
inauguration of the T.A. Ganguly Library was held on Sept. 2 at the Department of
World Religions and Culture with the participation of Christian and Muslim scholars
and officials, as well as about a hundred students. The T.A. Ganguly Library is
part of the department where the archbishop was one of the most distinguished scholars,
and contains a series of volumes dedicated to his life provided by the archdiocese
to the university. The ceremony was held on the 36th death anniversary
of the prelate and 7 years since the start of the cause of his beatification and canonization
in 2006. "We are very pleased to be able to dedicate this project to him," said Vice
Chancellor Arefin Siddique, a Muslim, at the opening ceremony. "He was a wise person
as well as a great teacher." Archbishop Ganguly was born in 1920 and ordained a priest
of the Holy Cross Congregation in 1946. Consecrated bishop in 1960 he became Archbishop
of Dhaka in 1967 and retired in 1970. He died in 1977 at the age of 57. "He was
a great man, not only for Christians but for all the people of Bangladesh, of any
religious belief," Fr Tapon B. Rozario told AsiaNews. "He had an exceptional charisma,"
said the clergyman, who also teaches in the department, "and it is right that our
students should learn more about him and his work." (Source: AsiaNews)
